Posted: May 07, 2012 AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer: Neighborhood CoordinatorCompany/Organization: montgomeryhousingpartnership, inc.Location: 12200 Tech Road, Suite 250, Silver Spring, MD 20904 Salary: Stipend - see below Schedule: The position is expected to be filled no later than June 22, 2012 Description: Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP) seeks a qualified candidate to devote a year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer assisting with projects related to neighborhood revitalization and community development work. Who we are: Montgomery Housing Partnership, Inc. (MHP) is a leading nonprofit organization in Montgomery County, MD whose mission it is to house people, empower residents, and strengthen neighborhoods. MHP currently owns and operates over 1,300 units. MHP neighborhood based activities and projects help to develop and improve the physical and social fabric of targeted neighborhoods, analyze neighborhood conditions, demographics and housing markets, improve social and safety conditions, provide technical assistance to neighborhood homeowners, renters and small business owners, conduct outreach and community organizing, and identify public and private resources to help with the above.
Responsibilities: Neighborhood Coordinator Tasks: Depending on MHP need and the individual’s skill set, the Neighborhood Coordinator will help lead or assist with one or more of the following: community organizing and outreach, neighborhood planning and visioning, community building events, field surveys of targeted neighborhoods, outreach efforts to residential property owners, residents, businesses, and commercial property owners, foreclosure prevention efforts, GIS mapping, graphic or urban design tasks, grant writing and fundraising activities, or other duties as assigned. Occasional evening or weekend work required. Requirements: Necessary Skills: Candidates should be able to communicate effectively through writing and speaking and be familiar with Microsoft Office computer applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), as well as feel comfortable working in economically challenged and ethnically diverse communities. Ideal candidates will be bilingual in English and Spanish and have skills, education, or experience in at least two of the following: neighborhood planning and revitalization, community organizing, small business development, real estate development, survey design or implementation, GIS/mapping, public meeting facilitation, urban or landscape design, development of progress metrics or indicators, grant writing or fundraising. Candidates must have their own transportation.
Contact Info: Compensation/Benefits: This is a year long volunteer position consisting of regular, full time employment with MHP, Inc. that is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) under the AmeriCorps VISTA program. The volunteers will give a year of service to MHP, Inc. but in return will receive a monthly living allowance of $1,320 from CNCS. The VISTA volunteers will also be eligible to choose from a $5,350 Education Award OR a $1,500 cash stipend for completion of service. VISTA volunteers are eligible for health care coverage, student loan forbearance, child care, medical benefits, and leave time from CNCS. MHP, Inc. can also reimburse VISTA members for mileage and job related expenses.
