Position Description:

The Montgomery County Planning Department in Silver Spring, Maryland has an opening for a Senior Planner and a Planner Coordinator in Area 3, Master Planning Section. These positions provide an opportunity to work with a team that will help guide future development in the rural and suburban areas of Montgomery County, Maryland, extending from Potomac, north to Clarksburg and Damascus, and east to Olney and Fairland.

The selected candidates will help develop comprehensive area master plans for Area 3. The primary tasks include assisting with data collection and analysis, preparing and analyzing GIS data, conducting public outreach activities, and responding to citizen inquiries. The selected candidate will be required to coordinate land use recommendations with other agencies, prepare technical reports, meet regulatory deadlines, use electronic tracking databases, deliver presentations to the Planning Board, attend civic association meetings, and respond to information requests from residents, developers, planners, architects, engineers, attorneys and public officials. Fieldwork and occasional evening meetings are required.

In addition to the above mentioned duties, the Planner Coordinator will also assist in developing master plan work programs, create and manage outreach efforts, organize and write planning documents, and present final recommendations and plans. The responsibilities include leading designated projects or studies; and planning, directing, and coordinating the work of other planning staff.

Candidates must possess strong analytic capabilities, experience and interest in master planning, as well as agricultural and rural open space preservation. Strong oral and written communication skills, experience with GIS, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and PC based planning and mapping programs, interest and ability to work directly with the public on technical issues and the ability to work successfully in a multi-disciplinary setting are required.
