Certification Maintenance

AICP’s Certification Maintenance (CM) program helps planners gain the knowledge and skills they need to remain current in the practice of planning. In addition to CM credits available through the American Planning Association (APA) National Conference and on-demand webinars, the National Capital Area Chapter hosts or sponsors local events throughout the year that provide CM credits for planners with AICP designation.

Regular CM-eligible Events in the National Capital Area

  • Annual Chapter Conference – Typically held in the summer or fall each year with around 20 of CM credits available. Attendance requires modest registration fee and includes classroom sessions and mobile workshops.

  • Tuesdays at APA – Join APA at their in Washington, D.C. office each month for this after-work lecture and discussion series.

  • Makeover Montgomery is a conference held every two years by the Montgomery County Planning Department and the National Center for Smart Growth at the University of Maryland. The next conference will be held in 2020.

  • DesignDC – Annual conference of the DC metropolitan chapters of American Institute of Architects (AIA) that typically includes some CM-approved sessions.

  • APA Policy and Advocacy Conference – Held annually in Washington, DC to connect planners with their federally elected officials, train attendees how to be effective advocates, and present an important opportunity for planning professionals to influence policy outcomes at the federal level.
